Advice on Selling a Business - Patience is Required
It is not unusual for sellers to experience a sense of anti-climax after the sale has completed - a sudden end to a period of frenetic activity and stress. However, this usually gives way very soon to relief that the money is in the bank, the business is in good hands and the reward for all the hard work can now be enjoyed.
Usually, the seller will have some on-going responsibility to the new owner of the business ranging from a short handover to long term consultancy.
If we have done our job properly, the owner will have taken advice on what to do with the money well before the date of completion, so one task may be to manage the investment of the funds. However, we recommend owners should also treat themselves and their family, because it is a good idea to mark it in some way.
Quote from history: ‘So pleasant it is to have money, heigh ho' Arthur Clough (1819 - 1861)
In summary, the process of selling a business can be stressful for owners even when advised by experienced business brokers such as Anderson Shaw, so taking a break or enjoying some other treat after the sale is a good idea.
